Directing at a Design Agency

Catalog is a productized design agency, working primarily with startups to help tackle a wide variety of design needs: Product, brandng, graphic, marketing, and web design are a few major use cases. The clients come from a diverse background of industries and always bring interesting challenges. Catalog is different to a traditional agency in that it excels in delivery speed. Client work is usually sent out within the same week it's been processed, meaning they are never left in the dark when it comes to their design projects.
SUMMARY
It's a bit difficult to share previous and active client work due to a number of contract and disclosure clauses. I can however link to the public facing website to give an idea of the types of clients we've worked with in the past.
At Catalog, my primary role as a design director is to manage a number of clients and designers.
Clients
Because clients typically come from an early-stage startup, the design director plays a big role in the UX of the problems they are trying to solve. The client is at an early enough stage to pivot if there are better solutions available. This also means that I am in constant communication with clients, understanding their needs today and how it can change in the future. This opportunity has allowed me to work directly with a number of industries at different stages of their company lifecycle. Everyone is different and being able to quickly adapt to clients is important in this role.
Designers
Designers at Catalog are extremely talented individuals with a ton of skills at their disposal. I provide support in briefing and reviewing design tasks, as their direct report. I also take part in new hires and providing guidance for areas of improvement in their design, communication, and leadership abilities. It's my job to help designers feel comfortable and confident in the busy workspace.
